Efforts made to protect interpreters, drivers and others at risk once U.S. leaves Afghanistan.
With the military’s September deadline for full withdrawal from Afghanistan moving closer, President Biden’s administration has solidified a plan to protect Afghans who aided the military during their 20-year presence in the country. Thousands of Afghan translators and drivers will be greatly at risk of Taliban-inflicted violence after the U.S. military withdrawal, so the administration plans to evacuate them to another NATO country while their travel visas are processed.
“We’ve long said we are committed to supporting those who have helped U.S. military and other government personnel perform their duties, often at great personal risk to themselves and their families,” a military official said regarding the protection effort.
“We’ve already begun the process,” stated President Biden of the plan. “Those who helped us are not going to be left behind.”
